Push Lawn Mowers

Gas or electric? Maybe even people powered. You have many choices when it comes to push lawn mowers

When the lawn mower was invented in 1827 by English engineer named Edwin Beard Budding, no one thought the machine would be very popular. Machines make lives easier and more convenient. The lawn mower has facilitated ease and comfort especially to homeowners and park administrators, who always need to make sure the grass is maintained short and well cut.

Needless to say, the initial forms of lawn mowers were those that are pushed around. Push lawn mowers (also called a walk behind mower) were easy, practical and less costly to use because the operator only needs to push them around. The machines have blades that facilitate grass cutting and shearing. Walk behind mowers are of several usual types, like reel mowers and rotary mowers.

If you are maintaining a garden or a small to medium sized yard, the push lawn mower is recommended. Riding lawn mowers are most ideal for lawn areas exceeding half an acre. Push mowers could still be useful in massive lawn areas, but because the equipment is smaller and manually pushed by operators, it may take longer to get the job done.

Rotary Push Mowers

The most common type of push lawn mower is the rotary mower. These machines have horizontally mounted blades that are fan-style. Such blades spin circularly. Rotary mowers are powered usually by internal combustion engines, usually two or four-stroke. Despite having engines, many rotary mowers are still pushed around by operators. If you want the upgrade, you can get a self-propelled mower where you just have to walk behind the mower and it does the work for you.

There are even rotary push lawn mowers that are powered by electricity. They could be corded or cordless. Corded, as the name suggest, means that you are directly attached to electric outlets. Some operators dislike the idea of having limitations when pushing around. Extension wires could be used but on the other hand, there are cordless types that are powered by rechargeable batteries. The batteries could be found in the interior or exterior of the lawn mower.

Features of Push Lawn Mowers

Through the years, different modifications in walk behind mowers have been introduced. Now, you could find and buy walk behind mowers with advanced features like any of the following.

Hydrostatic transmission - The feature facilitates ground speeds for all types of mowing. The feature gives operators the comfort and convenience to easily pace behind the machine to facilitate for a really excellent grass cut.

Easy-empty grass bag - There are some push lawn mowers with grass bags so the cut lawn would instantly be taken care of. The feature logically helps save effort and time. When looking for such push mowers, find bags that could be emptied, removed and replaced very easily.

Steel handles - It would be great if the lawn mower could have ergonomically engineered handles so pushing the equipment will be more comfortable. The handles should be durable to withstand heavy usage of daily commercial lawn mowing.

Rotostop system - The push lawn mower's motor could run even without the need to spin the blade so the operator could walk safely while still pushing the mower. This eliminates the need to frequently turn off and restart the machine so that time and effort could be saved.

Push mowers do not necessarily have to be costly. The price tags are dependent on manufacturer but every company seems to make a budget lawn mower so there is no excuse to have a beautifully manicured lawn this summer.

The Push Reel Mower

The reel mower was the original form of walk behind mower. It is mechanically operated, with mechanisms that have improveded over the years as technology continues to advance. There is a horizontal cutting blade that is carried strategically close to the grass. The blade height can be adjusted based on the preference and need of the operator. Over the blade is a reel of fast-spinning blades. Every blade forms a helix rotating in a reel axis. The set of blades that spin comprise the cylinder. Spinning blades facilitate grass cutting.

The reel mower is the most energy efficient type of mower there is. For more information on green products, check out www.thinkgreenenergysaver.com.
